Theorem 5.4 · \(\GL_n/(\GL_p\times\GL_q)\), pair model: orbits, lifts, a componentwise support bound and \((\mathrm{SG})\) over every \(F\)

proved audit: correct ★ key step

Second audit: correct. Re-derived: the Goursat description, the stacked-basis normal form and the resulting bijection with \(\Lambda_S^+\), the label of \(t^\lambda x_0\), and the quotient argument for the componentwise bound. The displayed normal form is schematic for the indices with \(a_i=0\) (routine). Tested by computation over \(\F_2[[t]]\) (all lattices of every dominant type with parts \(\le3\) for \(n=3\), \(\le2\) for \(n=4\), \(\le1\) for \(n=5\)): the bound and the top label hold. The statement is for the pair model; in residue characteristic 2 it is a different integral model from the involution model, as the node says.

In the model of pairs of complementary subspaces, the \(K\)-orbits are classified by the elementary divisors of \(\pi_V(\cO^n)\) modulo \(\cO^n\cap V\), the dominant lifts \((a,0,\dots,0)\) reach every orbit, and a quotient-module argument bounds supports componentwise; Proposition B then gives \((\mathrm{SG})\) over every local field.

Theorem 5.4.

Let \(p\le q\), \(n=p+q\), and let \(X(F)=\{(U,V):F^n=U\oplus V,\ \dim U=q,\ \dim V=p\}\), the pair model of \(\GL_n/(\GL_q\times\GL_p)\) over \(\Z\); it coincides with the involution model of the families page iff \(2\in\cO^\times\). Take the base point \(x_0=(U_0,V_0)\), \(U_0=\langle e_i+e_{n+1-i}\ (i\le p),\ e_j\ (p\lt j\le q)\rangle\), \(V_0=\langle e_{n+1-i}\ (i\le p)\rangle\), and \(L_0=\cO^n\). For a lattice \(L\) let \(\ell(U,V;L)\) be the type of \(\pi_V(L)/(L\cap V)\), where \(\pi_V\) is the projection onto \(V\) along \(U\). For every non-archimedean local field \(F\):

  1. \(\ell(\,\cdot\,;L_0)\) is a bijection from \(K\backslash X(F)\) onto \(\{a_1\ge\dots\ge a_p\ge0\}=\Lambda_S^+\), and the orbits are compact open;
  2. for \(\lambda=(a_1,\dots,a_p,0,\dots,0)\) the point \(t^\lambda x_0\) has label \(a\);
  3. for this \(\lambda\), \(K\,t^\lambda X(\cO)\subseteq\bigcup_{b\le a\text{ componentwise}}O_b\subseteq\bigcup_{\nu\le\varphi(\lambda)}O_\nu\);
  4. \(\cH_K\cdot\varphi_0=C_K\).

The model. The vectors \(e_i+e_{n+1-i}\), \(e_j\), \(e_{n+1-i}\) form a basis of \(\cO^n\), so \(L_0=(L_0\cap U_0)\oplus(L_0\cap V_0)\) and \(x_0\in X(\cO)\) for every \(\cO\). When \(2\notin\cO^\times\), the base point of the involution model, whose second space is spanned by the \(e_i-e_{n+1-i}\), has label \((\val2,\dots,\val2)\) instead. The label is \(G(F)\)-equivariant in the pair \((x,L)\), hence \(K\)-invariant for \(L=L_0\).

  1. Normal form. For a lattice \(L\subset U\oplus V\) put \(A=\pi_UL\supseteq A'=L\cap U\) and \(B=\pi_VL\supseteq B'=L\cap V\). Then \(L/(A'\oplus B')\) is the graph of an isomorphism \(\psi:A/A'\to B/B'\), and \(L=\{l\in A\oplus B:\psi(\pi_Ul)=\pi_Vl\}\). Choose a basis \(u_i\) of \(A\) with \(A'=\bigoplus\varpi^{a_i}\cO u_i\), lift \(\psi(\bar u_i)\) to \(v_i\in B\) for \(a_i>0\), and complete to a basis of \(B\) by vectors from which their \(\psi\)-components have been subtracted, so that they lie in \(B'\). Then \(B'=\bigoplus\varpi^{a_i}\cO v_i\oplus(\text{the added vectors})\) and
$$L=\bigoplus_i\big(\varpi^{a_i}\cO u_i+\varpi^{a_i}\cO v_i+\cO(u_i+v_i)\big)\ \oplus\ (\text{the remaining basis vectors}),$$

a normal form under \(\GL(U)\times\GL(V)\) that depends only on \(a\). Two points with the same label relative to \(L_0\) are therefore related by an element of \(\GL_n(F)\) that preserves \(L_0\), that is, by an element of \(K\). The orbits are open (the orbit map is a submersion) and compact.

  1. Lift. \(t^\lambda U_0=\langle\varpi^{a_i}e_i+e_{n+1-i},\,e_j\rangle\), \(t^\lambda V_0=V_0\), and \(\pi_{V_0}(e_i)=-\varpi^{-a_i}e_{n+1-i}\). Hence \(\pi_{V_0}(L_0)/(L_0\cap V_0)\cong\bigoplus\cO/\varpi^{a_i}\): the label is \(a\), and \(\lambda\) is the lift of section 5 of the families page.
  1. Support bound. For \(g\in Kt^\lambda K\), \(\ell(gx_0;L_0)=\ell(x_0;L')\) with \(L'=g^{-1}L_0\supseteq L_0\) and \(L'/L_0\cong\bigoplus\cO/\varpi^{\lambda_i}\). Since \(\pi_{V_0}(L_0)=L_0\cap V_0\subseteq L'\cap V_0\), the module \(\pi_{V_0}(L')/(L'\cap V_0)\) is a quotient of \(L'/L_0\), so its type \(b\) is componentwise at most \(a\): the dimensions \(\dim\varpi^{k-1}N/\varpi^kN\) can only drop when \(N\) is replaced by a quotient. Componentwise \(\le\) implies dominance.
  1. Generation. The componentwise order has finite lower sets. Lemma A(2) and Proposition B with \(f_a=T_{(a,0,\dots,0)}\) give \((\mathrm{SG})\) for every \(p\le q\) and every \(F\). \(\square\)

Only lattice algebra is used. For \(p=q=1\) the result agrees with Proposition J(1).

GL_n/(GL_p x GL_q): orbits, lift, componentwise support bound; (SG) for every F

Model: \(X=\{(U,V):F^n=U\oplus V,\ \dim U=q,\ \dim V=p\}\) (\(=\mathrm{GL}_n/(\mathrm{GL}_q\times\mathrm{GL}_p)\) over \(\mathbb Z\); it is the \(J\)-model of families/gl-pq.html iff \(2\in\mathcal O^\times\), the \(J\)-base point having label \((\operatorname{val}2,\dots)\) otherwise). \(L_0=\mathcal O^n\), \(x_0=(U_0,V_0)\), \(U_0=\langle e_i+e_{n+1-i}\ (i\le p),\ e_j\ (p<j\le q)\rangle\), \(V_0=\langle e_{n+1-i}\ (i\le p)\rangle\); \(L_0=(L_0\cap U_0)\oplus(L_0\cap V_0)\), so \(x_0\in X(\mathcal O)\) for every \(\mathcal O\).

Label. \(\ell(U,V):=\) type of \(\pi_V(L_0)/(L_0\cap V)\), a \(p\)-tuple \(a_1\ge\dots\ge a_p\ge0\); \(G(F)\)-equivariant in \((x,L)\).

(i) \(K\backslash X(F)\leftrightarrow\{a_1\ge\dots\ge a_p\ge0\}=\Lambda_S^+\) (any \(F\)). For a lattice \(L\subset U\oplus V\): \(A=\pi_UL\supseteq A'=L\cap U\), \(B=\pi_VL\supseteq B'=L\cap V\), and \(L/(A'\oplus B')\) is the graph of an iso \(\psi:A/A'\to B/B'\), \(L=\{l\in A\oplus B:\psi(\pi_Ul)=\pi_Vl\}\). Take a basis \(u_i\) of \(A\) with \(A'=\oplus\varpi^{a_i}\mathcal Ou_i\), lift \(\psi(\bar u_i)\) to \(v_i\in B\) (\(a_i>0\)), complete to a basis of \(B\) killing the \(\psi\)-components of the new vectors; then \(B'=\oplus\varpi^{a_i}\mathcal Ov_i\) and \(L=\oplus_i(\varpi^{a_i}\mathcal Ou_i+\varpi^{a_i}\mathcal Ov_i+\mathcal O(u_i+v_i))\): an \(H(F)=\mathrm{GL}(U)\times\mathrm{GL}(V)\)-normal form determined by \(a\). So \(K\backslash X(F)\) is indexed by \(a\); orbits are open (orbit map a submersion) and compact.

(ii) \(t^\lambda x_0\), \(\lambda=(a_1,\dots,a_p,0,\dots,0)\): \(t^\lambda U_0=\langle\varpi^{a_i}e_i+e_{n+1-i},e_j\rangle\), \(t^\lambda V_0=V_0\), \(\pi_{V_0}(e_i)=-\varpi^{-a_i}e_{n+1-i}\), so \(\ell=a\) (the lift of families/gl-pq.html §5).

(iii) Support bound. For \(g\in Kt^\lambda K\): \(\ell(gx_0,L_0)=\ell(x_0,L')\), \(L'=g^{-1}L_0\supseteq L_0\), \(L'/L_0\cong\oplus\mathcal O/\varpi^{\lambda_i}\). As \(\pi_{V_0}(L_0)=L_0\cap V_0\subseteq L'\cap V_0\), the module \(\pi_{V_0}(L')/(L'\cap V_0)\) is a quotient of \(L'/L_0\), so its type \(b\) is \(\le a\) componentwise (\(\dim\varpi^{k-1}N/\varpi^kN\) decreases under quotients): $$K\,t^\lambda X(\mathcal O)\subseteq\textstyle\bigcup_{b\le a\ \mathrm{cw}}O_b\subseteq\bigcup_{\nu\le\varphi(\lambda)}O_\nu .$$

(iv) Lemma A(2) + Proposition B (componentwise order, finite lower sets, \(f_a=T_{(a,0,\dots,0)}\)): (SG) for every \(p\le q\), every \(F\). \(\square\) Only lattice algebra used; \(p=q=1\) agrees with Prop. J(1).
