Audit 9.7 · Audit of A6-6: $\mathcal H_I\ast\varphi_0=C_K+C_{K'}$ has codimension two

proved ★ key step

Holds over every non-archimedean F: the span of f_n, f_n^(1) is Hecke-stable, equals C_K + C_K', and has codimension exactly 2, with quotient detected by λ (Steinberg, T_ω ↦ −1) and ψ (twisted Steinberg, T_ω ↦ +1). One wording repair in (e).

Audit 9.7.

Holds for every non-archimedean local field \(F\) (any residue characteristic, no weights, no I1I1 · Finite levels: LX has a level presentation in which every object of C_I is pulled back from a finite level Y_{N,M} and each level has finitely many pieces (Iwahori-generation pages, Proposition III).): (a)–(d) of Proposition 6.6 are correct. Minor repair of (e): read “the trace of every Weil object whose underlying object lies in \(\mathcal C_I^{\mathrm{Iwa}}\) lies in \(\mathcal H_I\ast\varphi_0\)”. A simple Weil perverse sheaf with geometric constituent \(\mathrm{IC}_{i,n}\) is \(\mathrm{IC}_{i,n}\otimes V\) with \(\dim V=1\), so its trace is a multiple of \(f^{(i)}_n\). This part needs Proposition 6.5, hence I1I1 · Finite levels: LX has a level presentation in which every object of C_I is pulled back from a finite level Y_{N,M} and each level has finitely many pieces (Iwahori-generation pages, Proposition III)..

  1. (a). \(\mathcal H_I\) is generated by \(T_{s_0},T_{s_1},T_\omega^{\pm1}\), and \(T_\omega^{-1}=T_\omega\) on \(C_I\). The span \(V=\langle f_n,f^{(1)}_n\rangle\) is stable by the shadow identities (Audit 9.4 step 6) and contains \(f_0=\mathbf 1_{Y_0}=\varphi_0\). Conversely \(f^{(1)}_{n+1}=(T_{s_0}+1)f_n-qf^{(1)}_{n-1}\) and \(f_{n+1}=T_\omega f^{(1)}_{n+1}\). Also \(f_n-f_{n-1}=\mathbf 1_{Y_n}\), so \(\langle f_n\rangle=C_K\). All of this uses only the tree, so it holds over every \(F\).
  2. (b), recomputed. Inside \(\langle\mathbf 1_O:O\subseteq Y_N\cup\omega Y_N\rangle\) (dimension \(2N+4\)), the \(2N+2\) vectors \(f_n,f^{(1)}_n\) (\(n\le N\)) have rank \(2N+2\) by exact Gaussian elimination (\(N=12\), \(q\in\{2,3,4,5,7,9\}\)), so the cokernel is \(2\)-dimensional. The annihilator is \(\langle\lambda,\psi\rangle\), with pairing determinant \(1\) against \(\mathbf 1_{A_\pm}\). Each \(I\)-orbit is compact and open (countably many orbits, Baire), so \(\{\mathbf 1_O\}\) is a basis of \(C_I\).
  3. (c). \(\lambda\circ T_s=-\lambda\), \(\psi\circ T_s=-\psi\) (\(s=s_0,s_1\)), \(\lambda\circ T_\omega=-\lambda\), \(\psi\circ T_\omega=\psi\). Verified by hand on every block of Computation 6.2 (e.g. \(\psi(T_{s_1}\mathbf 1_{O_{0,m}})=q(-1)^m+(q-1)(-1)^{m+1}=(-1)^m\)) and by machine for \(m\le28\) and six values of \(q\). \(\varepsilon_\pm\) are characters: \((-1-q)(-1+1)=0\).
  4. (d), orientation checked. The Steinberg map is \(f\mapsto\big(h\mapsto\int f(a,b)(h(a)-h(b))\big)\), with \((a,b)=(g\infty,g0)\) for \(\gamma=gT\). Pair it with the \(I\)-fixed vector \(\mathbf 1_{\mathcal O}\), where \(\mathcal O\) is the set of ends on the \(v_0\) side: the integrand is \(+f\) on \(A_+\), \(-f\) on \(A_-\) and \(0\) elsewhere, giving \(\mathrm{vol}(A_+)\lambda\). Moreover \(\omega\mathbf 1_{\mathcal O}\equiv-\mathbf 1_{\mathcal O}\) modulo constants, so \(\mathrm{St}^I=\varepsilon_-\).
  5. The twisted Steinberg functional (heuristic, supports A6's remark). \(\ell'(h)=\int_{F^\times}h(z)(-1)^{\operatorname{val}z}\,d^\times z\), Tate-regularized near \(0\) and \(\infty\), satisfies \(\ell'(t\cdot h)=\chi_0(t)\ell'(h)\) for \(t\in T(F)\), with \(\chi_0=(-1)^{\operatorname{val}\det}\), and kills constants (\(\sum_{k\in\mathbb Z}(-1)^k\) regularizes to \(0\)). So \(\mathrm{St}\otimes\chi_0\) is \(T\)-distinguished. Its Frobenius-reciprocity map restricted to \(C_I\) is a nonzero \(\varepsilon_+\)-map killing \(C_K+C_{K'}\) (since \(\chi_0|_K=\chi_0|_{K'}=1\) and \(\mathrm{St}^K=0\)). By step 2 it is a multiple of \(\psi\).
