Audit 9.4 · Audit of A6-4: the convolution rules for $\mathrm{IC}s\ast_I\mathrm{IC}{i,n}$

proved

Holds: the fibre of the convolution map is a disjoint union of copies of P^1 and points, the decomposition theorem applies to a rationally smooth source, and peeling by stalk ranks is legitimate because stalks of a direct sum add degree by degree.

Audit 9.4.

Holds over \(\overline{\mathbb F}_q\) (up to Tate twists) and over \(\mathbb C\), given finite-level models of the convolution (Objection 9.5). (a), (b), (c) of Lemma 6.4 and the function shadow \((T_{s_0}+1)f_n=f^{(1)}_{n+1}+qf^{(1)}_{n-1}\), \((T_{s_1}+1)f_n=(q+1)f_n\) are correct.

  1. Source. \(\mathrm{IC}_{s_0}\ast\mathrm{IC}_{0,n}=\nu'_*k[n+2]\) with \(\nu':P_{s_0}\times^I\widetilde Y_n\to LX\); for \(\mathrm{GL}_2\), \(P_{s_0}=K'=\omega K\omega^{-1}\) (rank one), and the source is a Zariski-locally trivial \(\widetilde Y_n\)-bundle over \(P_{s_0}/I=\mathbb P^1\), so its IC sheaf is constant (Audit 9.3 step 2).
  2. Fibre. Recomputed: for \(u\in\gamma\) with \(r=d(v_1,u)\), the neighbours \(v'\) of \(v_1\) are at distance \(r\pm1\) from \(u\) (only \(r+1\) if \(r=0\)); the condition \(d(v',u)\le n\), \(d(v',u)\equiv n\) forces \(r\equiv n+1\) and then holds for all \(v'\) (\(r\le n-1\)), for exactly one \(v'\) (\(r=n+1\)), or for none. The fibre is a disjoint union over the finitely many \(u\) (a finite set of points of \(\mathrm{Gr}\)), so \(H^*=k^{a}\oplus k^{b}[-2]\) with \(a=f^{(1)}_{n+1}(\gamma)\), \(b=f^{(1)}_{n-1}(\gamma)\).
  3. Decomposition. \(\nu'\) is proper at finite level, \(k[n+2]((n+2)/2)\) is pure of weight \(0\), so \(\nu'_*\) is pure (BBD 5.1.14) and geometrically a direct sum of shifted simple perverse sheaves (BBD 5.4.5, 5.3.8); over \(\mathbb C\), BBD 6.2.5. The summands are \(I\)-equivariant, hence ICs of orbits with constant coefficients (Audit 9.1 step 3).
  4. Peeling. At \(\gamma\in O_{1,n+1}\) the stalk is \(k[n+2]\) (rank one, one degree), so \(\mathrm{IC}_{1,n+1}\) occurs exactly once and unshifted. Stalks of a direct sum are direct sums of graded spaces, so the complement \(R\) has stalks \(k^{b(\gamma)}[n]\). At \(\gamma\in O_{1,n-1}\), \(b=1\): \(\mathrm{IC}_{1,n-1}\) occurs once, unshifted; the rest has all stalks zero, hence is zero. Every step is valid.
  5. (b), (c). \(\mathrm{IC}_{0,n}\) is \(K\)-equivariant (IC of a \(K\)-stable irreducible closed subset, \(K\) connected) and \(P_{s_1}=K\); untwisting \(P_{s_1}\times^ILX\cong\mathbb P^1\times LX\) gives \(R\Gamma(\mathbb P^1)[1]\otimes\mathrm{IC}_{0,n}\). \(I\omega I=\omega I\) gives \(\mathrm{IC}_\omega\ast=\omega_*\), and \(\omega_*\mathrm{IC}_{1,n}=\mathrm{IC}_{0,n}\) because \(\omega^2\) acts trivially.
  6. Shadow, recomputed. Directly: \(\sum_{v'\sim v_1}\max(0,n+1-d(v',\gamma))\) equals \(\max(0,n+2-r_1)+q\max(0,n-r_1)\) if \(r_1=d(v_1,\gamma)\ge1\) and \((q+1)n+2\) if \(r_1=0\), which is \(f^{(1)}_{n+1}+qf^{(1)}_{n-1}\) in both cases. Numerically, by the Möbius action of the full panels on random ends, both identities held in 3 773 cases (\(p=2,3,5\), \(n\le5\)), and as identities of indicator vectors for \(n\le11\), \(q\in\{2,\dots,9\}\).
