Summary 5.12 · Verdict: (SG) fails, proved; \(\mathcal C_k^{\mathrm{Sat}}=\mathcal C_k\) modulo (O1)–(O3)
open ★ key step
All function-level claims survive. Every geometric and combinatorial sheaf-level input re-derives and is confirmed by independent computation. 'Sakellaridis's \(X\) is a split counterexample to IId' is proved modulo one named input: Chen–Yi's \(\ell\)-adic framework for this non-symmetric \(X\) in odd characteristic, i.e. obligations (O1)–(O3) of Objection 5.10. It is not established unconditionally.
Summary 5.12.
Claims that hold.
- A3-1, A3-4, A3-5 hold: for \(X=\mathrm{SL}_2^3\backslash\mathrm{Sp}_4\times\mathrm{Sp}_4\) (split), (SG) and every \((\mathrm{SG})_n\) fail over \(\mathbb F_q(\!(t)\!)\) for every \(q\), unconditionally and with no characteristic-0 input. Moreover \(c_1=\chi_1\chi_2^{-1}\) and \(c_2=\chi_1\chi_2\) exactly.
- A3-6, A3-7, A3-8 hold, as does A3-11(a)–(c).
- A3-9 and A3-2 hold as conditional statements.
Repairs needed.
- A3-1, step 4: perform the change of variables in integral form.
- A3-3(d): non-conjugacy requires \(a\ne\pm b^{\pm1}\).
- A3-4: the excluded set is \(\{\chi_1=1\}\cup\{\chi_2=|\cdot|\}\cup\{\chi_1^2=1\}\cup\{\chi_2^2=1\}\cup\{\text{reducibility}\}\).
- A3-8, A3-9: \(H^{2f}\to H^{2f}_c\), and use Lang–Weil for the top components.
- A3-11: drop the remark about even \(n\).
- A3-10: misdiagnosed. Replace it by (O1)–(O3) of Objection 5.10.
Status of "Sakellaridis's \(X\) is a split counterexample to IId": proved modulo a named input. The function half is proved. The categorical half, \(\mathcal C_k^{\mathrm{Sat}}=\mathcal C_k\) over \(\overline{\mathbb F}_q\), follows from the verified geometry once Chen–Yi's formalism (Thm 36 via Remark 37, a dimension theory, App. A, Prop. 70) is available for this \(X\). Concretely, that means (O1) [SW22, §2.2 and Lemma 2.3.10] in odd characteristic, (O2) the dimension theory \(\delta=3d_1+3d_2+e\), and (O3) the verbatim transfer.
Hypotheses satisfied by the example (analogues of (R), (C), D0–D3).
- (R) analogue: \(G=\mathrm{Sp}_4^2\), \(H\cong\mathrm{SL}_2^3\) and \(x_0\) are split over \(\mathbb F_q\). \(K\)-orbits on \(X(F_n)\) are classified by \(\Lambda_X^+\) over every \(\mathbb F_{q^n}\).
- (C) analogue: \(H\) is connected, and every \(\operatorname{Stab}_{L^+G}(x)\) is connected (Audit 5.6).
- D0 analogue: proved, namely orbits, finiteness of closures, the support bound \(\operatorname{supp}V_\lambda\ast\mathrm{IC}_0\subseteq\mathcal C_\lambda\) and the stabilizers. Antisymmetry of the closure order awaits (O2).
- D3: holds (connected stabilizers; also direct from the classification).
- D1, D2 (and H2, PH): open, reduced to (O1)–(O3).
- Not symmetric, so Proposition II itself does not apply. The question allows non-symmetric \(X\).
Evidence produced by this audit.
- A hand re-derivation of every step. Two statements are false as written, A3-3(d) at \(a=-b^{\pm1}\) and A3-10's reason; neither is used in the function-level proof.
- A finite-field Mackey test of A3-4, which matched in 40/40 cases (Computation 5.4).
- Brute-force lattice counts over \(\mathbb F_q(\!(t)\!)\) for \(q=3,5,7\), with exact agreement with the position formula and exact mass identities (Computation 5.7).
- Freudenthal-based branching, which equals the leading coefficients on 5247 pairs (Audit 5.8).
- Smoothness of the generic \(B\)-stabilizer for \(p\le11\) (Objection 5.10).
Mechanism (for question (2)). In the conditional picture, \(\mathcal C_k^{\mathrm{Sat}}=\mathcal C_k\) because \(c\) is the branching matrix of a subgroup (every row is nonzero). (SG) fails because fusion makes the restriction of characters non-surjective (the columns do not span). The trace of Frobenius sees \(V_\lambda\ast\mathrm{IC}_0\) only with \(e=\mathrm{id}\); the retracts that thick closure adds are exactly what is lost.
