Agent 1 · Trace formalism

The agent was asked why the trace of Frobenius cannot turn categorical generation into spherical generation, and which conditions force a counterexample. It first packed the function–sheaf dictionary into one matrix \(M\) over the group ring \(R=\mathbb Z[\overline{\mathbb Q}_\ell^\times]\), whose entries are the classes of the multiplicity spaces with their Frobenius (Setup 1.1). Theorem A (Theorem 1.2) reads all three statements off this matrix: the categorical statement says that no row of \(M\) vanishes; generation without retracts says that the cokernel vanishes once Frobenius is forgotten (Thomason); \((\mathrm{SG})_n\) says that the cokernel vanishes at the single point \(\mathrm{ev}_n\). Theorem T (Theorem 1.3) is the categorical form. The Frobenius-twisted Hochschild homology of \(\mathcal C_k\) is \(C_K\), that of the Hecke category is \(\mathcal H_K\), and the induced map is \(f\mapsto f\ast\varphi_0\). By Morita invariance the first is spanned by retracts of Satake objects with arbitrary Frobenius maps, while the Hecke category contributes only whole Satake objects with their canonical Frobenius. So (SG) asks a trace map to be onto, and thick generation does not control that.

It then proved criteria, valid over every local field, that force a failure: a Hecke eigenfunctional vanishing at \(\varphi_0\), multiplicity two, an extra \(\mathcal H_K\)-endomorphism, a relation among rows (Proposition 1.6). Independently of the agent on non-split forms, it found the norm-torus counterexample outside (R) (Counterexample 1.5). Inside (R) and (C) it showed that every twisting mechanism disappears and the converse reduces to the labels without dominant lifts (Proposition 1.8). It stopped there, at two missing lemmas (Dead end 1.11).

Part (2), mechanism (proved, Setup 1.1 to Theorem 1.3): under (R), (C), D0-D3 the passage from sheaves to functions is base change of one matrix M over R = Z[Qbar_l^x], whose entries are the classes of the multiplicity spaces E_{nu,i}(lambda) with their Frobenius: C^Sat_k = C_k iff no row of M vanishes; triangulated generation without retracts over k iff coker(M) tensor_eps Z = 0 (Thomason); (SG)n iff coker(M) tensor{ev_n} Qbar_l = 0, i.e. the cokernel vanishes at the single point ev_n. Categorically, Tr(Fr, C_k) = C_K and Tr(Fr, H) = H_K (Hochschild homology twisted by Frobenius, concentrated in degree 0), and Tr(act_{IC_0}) is f -> f*phi_0; by Morita invariance Tr(Fr, C_k) is spanned by classes of retracts of Satake objects, while the image of H is spanned only by the full alternating classes; the defect is carried by the relative endomorphism algebra A = act^R(IC_0) and the Frobenius eigenvalues on the multiplicity spaces. Thick closure = closure under retracts, which no additive (trace) invariant records; IIc is the direction that survives. Formal examples (proved, Example 1.4): nilpotents (killed by Frobenius weights), fusion of conjugacy classes (Z/3 in S_3; T in G), Frobenius permuting generators, traceless equivariance. Forcing criteria over any non-archimedean F, in particular F_q((t)) (proved, Counterexample 1.5 to Lemma 1.7): Frobenius moving Hecke labels / several G(F)-orbits, with the exact torus criterion ker(X_*(H)sigma -> X*(T)sigma) != 0; a Hecke eigenfunctional on C_K vanishing at phi_0 (also necessary when C_K is finitely generated over H_K); multiplicity >= 2 of some unramified pi in S(X(F)) or C^infty(X(F)); an H_K-endomorphism of C_K not induced by H_K; a row relation c in prod Qbar_l with c^T m^(1) = 0; close-field transfer: a failure at a label over p-adic fields of residue field F_q with unbounded ramification (integral models, Cartan decomposition) forces failure over F_q((t)). Part (1) outside (R) (proved, Counterexample 1.5): X = R{F_{q^2}/F_q} G_m / U_1 (theta = sigma o inverse) is symmetric, satisfies (C) and D0-D3, has C^Sat_k = C_k (even without retracts), and (SG) fails over F_q((t)) for every q, (SG)n holding iff n is even; only (R) fails (T not split). The unitary space R{F_{q^2}/F_q} GL_m / U_m is a non-abelian instance. (SG) is not an invariant of (X_k, G_k). Part (3) reduction (proved, Proposition 1.8): under (R), (C), D0-D3, Frobenius fixes all labels, X(F_n) = G(F_n) x_0, H-linear group automorphisms act trivially on C_K, every column of m^(n) has a nonzero top entry at phi(lambda) for every n (Kazhdan-Lusztig positivity), coverage gives (SG)_n for all n, and (SG) is equivalent to the spanning of the projections p_U(T_lambda * phi_0) onto the uncovered labels U.

Gap

For part (2): none. For the team's part (3) inside (R)+(C): the spanning condition of Proposition 1.8(e) at the given q - equivalently, if C_K is finitely generated over H_K, the non-existence of a Hecke eigenfunctional on C_K vanishing at phi_0 - which C^Sat_k = C_k does not decide. The two remaining mechanisms each need a missing lemma (Dead end 1.11): cancellation at n = 1 in the multiplicity spaces of an uncovered label for every lambda, or a spherical function on X(F_q((t))) vanishing on X(O) (e.g. via Sakellaridis's Theorem 8.0.2 in characteristic p, or via Lemma 1.7 from p-adic failures at unbounded ramification).

Target: part (2), the formal mechanism and the conditions. Starting points: (1) the trace of act_{IC_0}: H → C_k as −∗φ_0 on trace functions, and what the categorical trace theorems actually state; (2) Morita invariance; classes [M, α] with α arbitrary; thick generation does not give surjectivity on traces (smallest formal examples); (3) the cokernel through A = End_H(IC_0), multiplicity spaces and idempotents; (4) criteria forcing a counterexample: Frobenius permuting Satake objects or orbits, symmetries of the H-module C_k, row relations of m^{(1)}, the multiplicity criterion; spectral picture as heuristic; (5) conditions under which the trace argument does give the converse.
