Computation 4.8 · KL expansions of $C_xC_{w_0}C_y$ in types $\widetilde A_1$, $\widetilde A_2$
proved
A finite check of the shape of M_I: in the affine Hecke algebras of types Ã1 and Ã2, every product C_x C_{w_0} C_y with x, y short has non-negative coefficients, never contains C_e, contains only lowest-cell elements, and in Ã2 never contains a simple reflection; in Ã1 the affine reflection s_0 does occur.
Computation 4.8.
In the generic Hecke algebra over \(\mathbb Z[v^{\pm1}]\) with \((H_s+v)(H_s-v^{-1})=0\) and Kazhdan–Lusztig basis \(\underline H_z=H_z+\sum_{y<z}h_{y,z}H_y\), \(h_{y,z}\in v\mathbb Z[v]\), write \(\underline H_x\underline H_{w_0}\underline H_y=\sum_zh^z_{x,y}\underline H_z\). (a) Type \(\widetilde A_1\), \(\ell(x),\ell(y)\le6\): all \(h^z_{x,y}\in\mathbb N[v^{\pm1}]\); the \(z\) with \(h^z_{x,y}\ne0\) are \(25\) elements: all \(24\) elements of \(W_{\rm aff}\setminus\{e\}\) of length \(\le12\) and one of the two of length \(13\) (the other is not of the form \(x\,s_1y\) with \(\ell(x),\ell(y)\le6\)); \(s_0\) and \(s_1\) both occur; \(e\) never occurs. (b) Type \(\widetilde A_2\), \(\ell(x),\ell(y)\le4\): all \(h^z_{x,y}\in\mathbb N[v^{\pm1}]\); the \(100\) elements \(z\) that occur all lie in \(c_0=\{x\cdot w_J\cdot y\ \text{reduced}:|J|=2\}\); they include the three \(w_J\) and all \(18\) elements of \(c_0\) of length \(\le5\); no element of length \(1\) or \(2\) occurs, in particular no simple reflection and not \(e\). (c) Sanity values: \(\underline H_{w_0}^2=(v^3+2v+2v^{-1}+v^{-3})\underline H_{w_0}\) in \(\widetilde A_2\), \(\underline H_{s_0}\underline H_{s_1}\underline H_{s_0}=\underline H_{s_0s_1s_0}+\underline H_{s_0}\), \(h_{e,w_0}=v^3\).
- Model. \(W_{\rm aff}\) of type \(\widetilde A_{n-1}\) is realised as affine permutations \(f:\mathbb Z\to\mathbb Z\), \(f(i+n)=f(i)+n\), \(\sum_{i=1}^nf(i)=\binom{n+1}2\), with \(\ell(f)=\sum_{1\le i<j\le n}\big|\lfloor(f(j)-f(i))/n\rfloor\big|\) (Shi's inversion formula), right descents \(f(i)>f(i+1)\). The counts \(1,3,6,9,12\) of elements of length \(0,\dots,4\) in \(\widetilde A_2\) check the length function.
- Basis. \(\underline H_z\) is computed recursively by \(\underline H_{z'}\underline H_s=\underline H_{z's}+\sum_{u<z',\,us<u}\mu(u,z')\underline H_u\) for \(z's>z'\), \(\mu\) the coefficient of \(v\) in \(h_{u,z'}\); multiplication uses \(H_xH_s=H_{xs}\) or \(H_{xs}+(v^{-1}-v)H_x\). A product is re-expanded in the \(\underline H\) basis by repeatedly subtracting \(a\,\underline H_z\) for a term \(aH_z\) of maximal length (unitriangularity).
- Lowest cell. \(c_0\) is enumerated as \(\{xw_Jy:\ \ell(xw_Jy)=\ell(x)+3+\ell(y)\}\) over the three maximal proper \(J\) (all with \(\ell(w_J)=3=\nu\)); membership of each occurring \(z\) is tested directly.
- Why it matters. By Proposition 4.7 (4b) the coefficient \(h^z_{x,y}\) is the graded multiplicity \(\sum_n\dim E_{z,n}(x,y)v^{\pm n}\) of \(\mathrm{IC}_z\) in \(M_{x,y}\) (up to the normalisation of \(\mathrm{IC}_0\)). So (a) confirms Proposition 4.7(3) and (5) (\(s_0\in\mathcal M_I\) for \(\mathrm{SL}_2\)); (b) is consistent with \(\mathcal M_I=c_0\) and shows that, for \(\mathrm{SL}_3\), \(\mathcal C_I^{\mathrm{Iwa}}\) misses every \(\mathrm{IC}_s\) as well as \(\Delta_e\) in this range. It is a finite check, not a proof of Proposition 4.7(4).
